Programme Note:
English Program Notes: In 2007-2008, I was fortunate to work in residency with the Concert Band in residency at the Chestermere High School Music Department (Chestermere, Alberta). The residence was financed by a grant from the Canada Council, and was awarded the 2007 Joseph Stauffer Prize for most outstanding composition project. With funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, I was able to work directly with the Concert Band of Chestermere High School (Calgary, Alberta) in two workshops, culminating with the creation of a three-movement work for the Chestermere High School Concert Band (Music From the Great White), acting as an introduction for both performers and audience to contemporary Canadian composition.
Music from the Great White introduces contemporary concepts to the students, using Canadian composers Alexina Louie, Linda Catlin Smith, and Howard Bashaw as models (information and music by these composers can be found at the Canadian Music Centre website: http://www.musiccentre.ca/). I chose these three composers based on my strong feelings about the music they write and could therefore genuinely show the students what I appreciated about their music.
Each movement incoporates musical elements in methods similar to how the three composers might use them, as elements such as dissonance, meter change, rhythmical grouping, and foreign scales and modes are used to reveal the individual characters. The finished product attempts to fuse both the poetic and compositional sides of the three distinct Canadian characters with my own compositional style.
