Programme Note:
Chimney is a small lake situated in the Cariboo-Chilcotin district of British Columbia.
In Winter the surface freezes and the acoustics at the far end of the lake become remarkable—
sounds seem to have no origin due to the reverberation from the surrounding trees, and the cold
imparts to each sound a pristine fragility which is haunting.
The piece was composed in the Winter of 1993–4 in Toronto.
