Programme Note:
The expression “child’s play” is generally used to describe an activity that is easy and does not require much effort or attention. Actual children at play, however, tend to be completely absorbed in the activity - to the point where even rumbling tummies and their parents’ summons to dinner come as unwelcome interruptions. While playing, children build physical structures and devise rules that are deeply serious and important to them for as long as the game lasts.
This work celebrates that childlike approach to play which provides satisfaction and enjoyment even as it requires one’s full concentration and commitment.
This work was commissioned by Jon Washburn and the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and is dedicated to them.
