Programme Note:
Concentricity was inspired by the relationship between humans and technology. In the piece, I explore the capabilities and limitations of technology, as well as its effect on our intentions, goals and consciousness, and the human obsession with technology’s endless capabilities.

The relationship between humans and technology manifests itself literally in the piece. A dialogue is established between a human character (the flautist) and a ‘technological’ character (the electronic sounds), creating an unfolding dramatic situation. The two characters move through a repetitive cycle of various nuanced states of interaction (such as argument, imitation, play, prodding, etc.), but their exchange evolves over time, with new types of interaction emerging as the pieces progresses. The power dynamic between the two characters also varies significantly.

Concentricity is the quality of two or more objects sharing the same centre, a quality found in concentric circles, relating to the ever-expanding yet cyclical nature of the dialogue between the flute and electronics. Their relationship evolves and expands, but the cycle somehow remains constant. In the latter half of the piece, I explore what the effect of such an expanding, interdependent relationship might be.

The piece uses live digital signal processing (including pitch analysis, pitch shifting, cross synthesis, harmonization, delay and EQ), as well as prerecorded sound files. All prerecorded material is based on recordings of the flute.
