Programme Note:
My compositional style evolved quickly once I began working with George Perle
in New York. The Sonata No. 1 (1985) marked a broadening of the highly
controlled emotional content of my earlier works. Its three movements are
subtitled The Penitent, Hymn and Sacramental Dance. These titles are not
programmatic, but are meant to characterize my attempt to reconcile the great
classical tradition with the music of our time.
The Sonata won first prize in the 1986 Music Inter Alia Competition.

The piece was recorded in 1989 by violinist Victor Schultz and pianist Mary Jo Carrabré on a disc put out by the Manitoba Composers Association (MCVS001).

Premiere Information:
1985 Graduate Center New York City Won Bin Yim, violin Mary Jo Carrabre, piano
