Alain Gagnon

Alain Gagnon was born in Trois-Pistoles, Québec. He entered the École de musique of Laval University in 1960, obtaining a bachelor's degree (1963) and a licence in composition after studies with Jeanne Landry, Jocelyne Binet and Roger Matton. A winner of the Lieutenant Governor's Medal and of the French Government Prize, in 1965 he was awarded the Prix d'Europe of the Académie de Musique du Québec.

As an award-holder of The Canada Council and Québec's Ministère des Affaires culturelles, he worked in Paris with Olivier Alain at the École César-Franck and with Henri Dutilleux at the École Normale Supérieure de Musique. At the University of Utrecht, he was introduced to electroacoustic music and completed his composition and orchestration studies at the Conservatoire de Genève with André-François Marescotti.

Gagnon is professor at the École de musique of Laval University and pursues parallel careers as a teacher and composer.
