Michael R. Miller

Michael R. Miller was born 1932 in Lisbon, Portugal. He has a PhD in Composition from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, NY. He taught composition and theory at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB, 1967-98, and was awarded Professor Emeritus in May 1999.

He has written for many different instruments, voices, and combinations, including Symphony New Brunswick, Saint John String Quratet, Motion Ensemble; and Peter Allen , Pianist, and Sally Dibblee, soprano. His style employs 20th-century techniques but is characterized by quite traditional features like melodies, themes, motives, clear forms, contrast in mood and tempo, and the use of counterpoint.

Since 1999 he has been living in Fredericton, NB with his wife Edith Hoisington Miller. Their 3 sons have also become professionalmusicians. Andrew, a classical contrabassist, avant-garde composer, founder of Motion Ensemble and Open Arts, and teacher in the Sistema program, has 2 girls and is married to Deanna Musgrave, an artist. Nathaniel (Nate), a singer-guitarist in the rock tradition and drummer, composes and produces recordings in the techno-ambient genre. Joel is a tenor-sax jazz player and composer. He and his wife Christine Jensen, also a jazz saxist-composer, have a daughter. Joel’s music and band won, among other awards, Juno and ECMA awards for best contemporary jazz recording in 2014, and has produced a number of other CDs including one with his brother Nate. Edith, a professional writer of periodical articles and poems, launched her book of poetry in 2016.
