Jin Zhang

Jin Zhang was born in Beijing, China. He started his musical education at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and then traveled to Japan to study composition and conducting at The Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, Japan.

During his years in China and Japan, he composed and arranged many works for concerts, radio, television broadcasts and recordings. His compositions have won prizes, including 3rd prize in a national competition in China, and a 2nd prize win in a competition put on by The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. His name became officially cited in the Chinese section of the 1999 Who's who in world culture published by the China National press agency.

Since his arrival in Canada in 1990 he has continued his career in music, making CD recordings and composing for film. Some of his compositions have been broadcast by BBC, CBC, VTV and other networks. The film he composed for “Nu Shu”- (A Hidden Language of Women in China) won a prize at the Festival Internazionale Cinema Delle Donnein Torino, Italy.

A prolific composer, he has received commissions from the New Westminster Symphony Society, Vancouver Inter-Culture Orchestra, Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble, The Orchid Ensemble, BC Chinese Music Association. He composed for The Millennium Project produced by Vancouver Chinese Culture Centre, and has also received grants from Canada Council for the Arts for composition.

Jin's music has a wide range of style and variety. He has written for symphony orchestra, small ensembles, percussion, solo and film. His style ranges from contemporary, tonal, to electric and world music. Some of his compositions and arrangements have been played by many professional and community groups including Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony.

Jin Zhang has conducted The Vancouver Inter-Culture Orchestra, BC Sinfonietta, Vancouver Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, West Coast Symphony Orchestra and many other groups in lower mainland. Currently he holds the position of Music Director and Conductor of The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, The Vancouver Youth Symphony Intermediate Orchestra, as well as the B.C Chinese Music Association.

Recently he received a commission from Orchid Ensemble. He is also working on his CD recording for his composition. Both projects won the grant from Canada Council for the Arts.
