Jim O'Leary

Born and raised in Windsor, Newfoundland, Jim started playing drums in his teens, and studied percussion at the University of Prince Edward Island, receiving his Bachelor’s of Music in 1994. In 2000 he completed a Master’s in Music Composition, under the direction of composer Jan Sandström at the School of Music in Piteå, Sweden. Jim resided for many years in Stockholm, Sweden, where he divided his time between composing, performing, and teaching.

His music has been commissioned and performed by several leading ensembles and orchestras. In 2001, Jim was a finalist in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's composer competition, and received Stockholm County's Culture Prize 2002.

In 2006, Jim completed a Masters of Philosophy Degree (Musical Composition) at the University of Cambridge, England, followed by a Ph.D. from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2012. From 2011-2013, he was Composer in Residence with the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra.
