Comprised of top wind players from the capital region, Ottawa Winds naturally evolved as a chamber group from within the Ottawa Wind Ensemble which was formed by conductor Michael Goodwin in 1972. The ensemble, which performs exclusively in the Ottawa area, draws some of its members from the ranks of the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Chan Ka Nin began working on the Four Seasons Suite while studying with Jean Coulthard at the University of British Columbia. Initially it was conceived as a short work describing autumn and at the suggestion of his teacher, Chan completed the other 3 seasons. Only after the Suite was finished did Chan realize that he had joined the ranks of many composers who have been inspired by the changing seasons. For musical reasons, the order of the movements does not correspond to the calendar.
