Programme Note:

The Serenade Concertante, an orchestral work in one movement marked moderato, was written in 1954 at the request of the late John Avison for performance by the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra. That ensemble under Mr. Avison gave the first performance that same year. It has been published by Ricordi and it is Adaskin's most often performed work.

Following a performance by the Toronto Symphony in December 1960, the critic Frank Haworth wrote in the The Globe and Mail: "This is an urbane and occasionally skittish production. It blends contrapuntal ingenuities with syncopated quips in an idiom always accessible and pleasant to the ear. Soundly based on the procedures, tonal and other, sanctioned by the centuries, it gains freshness by discarding conventional formulas and developing its own logic. It enjoys modern freedoms without going to modern extremes."

For Arthur Cohn of the American Record Guide, Adaskin's Serenade Concertante is "a charmer, superbly fashioned and superbly finished."
