Programme Note:
“Plainsong” is a general term used for the sacred music of the early church and Middle Ages, also known as Gregorian chant. In this work, I attempted to transpose some of the structural features of responsories – a particular variety of chant – into my own contemporary musical language. Responsories are a very prominent part of the night office (one of the 8 “hours” of prayer observed by monasteries and cathedrals in the Middle Ages), and although I did not quote any chants directly, the music may be heard to have a kind of nocturnal quality. This piece is dedicated to Gillian Howard and Catherine Lee.
