Programme Note:
This little song interweaves a short quasi-chanted poem, written by the composer, with a stanza from the beautiful traditional song, En montant la rivière, as documented in the 3rd volume of the Chansons d’Acadie.

The aboiteau in the original poem becomes a metaphor for the need to resist the rising tide of English dominance that swept over Acadie in the 18th century, while the traditional song represents idealized memories—and shattered dreams.

Together, they are intended to evoke the inner thoughts of a hypothetical Grand Pré settler facing the looming reality of the déportation.

Aboiteau was commissioned by the Acadia New Music Society for Shattering the Silence 2010.
