Chris Thornborrow

Chris Thornborrow is a composer of chamber music, opera, orchestra, and film score. He is the Cofounder and Artistic Director of the Toy Piano Composers, a collective that has premiered and performed over 100 new operas, orchestra works, art songs, and chamber pieces.

Performers of his work include TorQ Percussion, junctQín keyboard collective, the Bicycle Opera Project, Thin Edge New Music Collective, Ensemble Paramirabo, and the Array Ensemble. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2013 Karen Keiser Prize in Canadian Music, and was the 2013 Honourable Mention of the Toronto Emerging Composer Award. He won the University of Toronto Orchestra Composition Competition in 2011 and received a 2012-13 Ontario Graduate Scholarship for his research.

Chris has composed for a number of award-winning films that have screened internationally, including We Ate The Children Last (TIFF, Claremont-Ferrand Short Film Festival), Earlth and Moonch (Milano International Film Festival), and Brandon Cronenberg’s The Camera and Christopher Merk (TIFF). He founded the music program at International Summer Camp Montana in Switzerland where he worked as a music teacher for five summers., and recently has conducted workshops on Canadian music and composition in schools throughout the GTA.
