Programme Note:
“The first two variations, though simple, contrast each other in texture. Variation III is lively. Out of its continuous sixteenth-note movement emerge references to a fragment of the theme. Variation IV is broad and tranquil, flowing over a chromatic ground bass. Variation V, in two-part writing, is graceful and light, while Variation VI is a whimsical march featuring chromaticism and textural contrasts. (...) Variation VII is slow-moving and intense. It explores the colourful sonority of the piano. The climax of the work arrives in Variation VIII, which covers a wide span of the keyboard. It ends majestically with a restatement of the last phrase of the theme.”
