Programme Note:
The first movement (Study in Fourths and Fifths) has a rather strong, bold nature, caused by the preponderance of fourths and, by inversion, fifths. Tritones also make their appearance. Since the fifth is part of a triad, a couple of sections feature triadic harmonies, suggestive a bit of medieval music.

The Study in Minor Thirds has a gentle nature and the thirds combine most often to form minor 7th harmonies.

The Fantasia study has many sections with contrasting textures and moods. Here the combining of several simultaneous orderings of the musical material forms very dense, almost jazzy harmonies in one section. In another section a choral effect is produced. In general a virtuoso style with fast passages is the rule.
