Programme Note:
Ceremonial Music for Convocation was commissioned by Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2009 to commemorate its one-hundredth convocation. The material for the three sections of the work is based on various musical traditions from Newfoundland. The Processional consists of variations on the Newfoundland Volunteers Band March. Since Memorial University was created to honour the memory of those Newfoundlanders who died in war, this march is particularly appropriate as a stirring entrance piece for the graduates and faculty. The actual tune of the March does not appear until the Coda. The Newfoundland folksong The Emigrant from Newfoundland forms the basis for the Interlude that is to be played during the signing of the register by the honorary graduand. Even though the text of the original song speaks of having to leave Newfoundland (which happened so often in its history), most of the text praises the incredible beauty of the land and the determination of its people. The Recessional consists of a passacaglia based on the national hymn for the province, the Ode to Newfoundland. The actual Ode is sung just before the graduates and faculty leave the auditorium and the opening notes of the Recessional mirror the opening notes of the Ode. The first eight notes of the Ode become the bass line in the piano over which continuous variations are created.
