Programme Note:
And There Was a Great Calm explores the extreme dynamics of the orchestra. It is loosely based on the sounds of a Thunder Storm on the Canadian Prairies. Growing up in Manitoba, I found the Thunder Storms to be both terrible and incredible. The orchestra is the perfect ensemble in which to explore a storm because the vastness of timbres and dynamics. The piece, with sudden shifts from loud to soft, gradually moves from the calm before a storm, to the storm itself, to the calm after.
