"The great composer, bandleader and clarinetist Phil Nimmons — the dean of Canadian jazz, some would say — turned 90 Monday.

Nimmons, who is the University of Toronto’s Director Emeritus of Jazz Studies (he began teaching there in 1973) has been a leading light of Canadian music since the mid-1950s. His 1976 album Atlantic Suite received the first Juno Award given in the jazz category. Here’s the third movement from that suite, played just last month at a Musicfest Canada event:
