Programme Note:
I. The Mersey River is one of Nova Scotia's longest rivers. Like all moving bodies of water, it is at times constant and predictable, calm and peaceful, or suddenly and surprisingly violent. I have spent much time on and around the Mersey River and have experienced its differing moods. This movement portrays the restlessness of the ever-changing river.

II. The South Shore of Nova Scotia has long been a friendly, simple expression of life and land. Chester, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, Liverpool and Shelburne are in some ways a united area of communities which draw visitors year-round. There is a genuineness and warmth that the people in these communities exude. This movement suggests a tranquil peacefulness.

III. The Cabot Trail and Cape Breton in general is a place I've always been fascinated with, beginning with the breathtaking beauty of the land, the mountains, the colours and the winding roads. It is truly one of the most gorgeous places on earth. Add to this the Celtic traditions in music and culture and the firm resolve of life the 'Capers' seem to have and it makes this an incredibly attractive project to portray musically. In this movement I combined the styles of Bach and Shostakovich with a slightly Celtic flare to portray the traditional and modern. All three movements are unified by a perpetual motion motif - eights in the first movement, quarter notes in the second and sixteenths in the third.
