Programme Note:
"Road to Ubud… was the first work ever written for the combination of gamelan and prepared piano. In addition to being prepared, the piano is tuned to a nine-tone equal-tempered scale of which the five-note ‘pelog’ scale of the gamelan is a subset. A ‘pelog’ scale can be played beginning on each of the nine pitches, and the piece thus utilizes this property to create a series of harmonic progressions.
“My wife and I often walked between the towns of Peliatan and Ubud in Bali during a visit there in the early 1980s. The road was particularly lovely, and this work is in memory of our time there, and of Ann Holloway.”

***

I am not the first to have noticed the similarity of certain sounds between the piano and gamelan instruments, although The Road to Ubud must be one of the first pieces in which they are heard together. In addition to preparation, the piano is tuned to a nine-note equal-tempered scale, of which the five-note "pelog" scale of the gamelan may be treated as a subset. A pelog scale may be treated at as a subset. A pelog-type scale can be based on each of the nine pitches, and the piece utilizes this property to create a series of harmonic progressions.
The piece is in memory of Ann Holloway, and the title refers to a road in Bali between the towns of Pelitan and Ubud that Ann and I often walked during a visit several years ago.
The Road to Ubud was commissioned by the Evergreen Gamelan Club with the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council.
