  • 1 x Baritone
  • 1 x Violoncello
Programme Note:
Angular Light is a selection of five songs, taken from a much longer cycle, Nineteen Songs, which I composed in Toronto in  just prior to moving to France. The original work was scored for baritone, bass flute, bass clarinet, trombone, cello and piano. Each of the original songs was a trio for baritone, piano, and one other performer—the four remaining instruments appeared cyclically, one at a time, save for the last piece which finally presented them all together. I quickly came to feel that my original conception was far too schematic and withdrew the work from my catalogue. The present score presents the five best songs, this time uniformly scored for baritone, cello and piano. The poems allude to modern architecture, as well as a sort of ’pataphysical search for alternative systems of classification and definition. Both were defining preoccupations at the time.
