Programme Note:
I was first captivated by curio boxes when I saw several extraordinary examples visiting the Palace Museum in Taipei several years ago. During the Qing Dynasty, these boxes were ingeniously designed with as many 48 hidden compartments. On the outside, they are small intricately constructed travel cases with decorative panels featuring gold inlay, mother of pearl, carved sandalwood or painting. The boxes open mysteriously revealing multiple levels and small compartments containing precious objects owned by or commissioned by the owner, usually a member of the Imperial Court. The treasures inside often included miniature paintings, poems, scrolls, calligraphy, timepieces, jade, porcelain, or bronze representing different cultures and historical periods. The idea of the curio box seemed to me quite musical in the way that musical memory often contains ‘musics’ of different places, time periods, and expressions. My composition The Curio Box at first imagines a mysterious exterior that opens to reveal seven different musical ‘objects’, concluding with a reassemblage of the box. The work was commissioned by Vancouver New Music for solo cellist Rebecca Wenham, and ten instruments. The piece references and includes a small quotation from The Seven Sides of Maxine's Silver Die by my former teacher Rudolf Komorous.
