Programme Note:
MUSIC WITH NO EDGES for clarinet, percussion, viola, cello and double bass (2004) My first extended composition for small ensemble, Music with no Edges remains an important step in my evolution as a composer. The score was begun in March 2004 in Paris, and completed in Toronto in July of the same year. The music resolutely avoids any fusion between of the five instruments. Nothing ‘sticks’ together, rather, each part floats independently around the others in its own rhythmic-melodic space. As such, the overall sound is governed in an essentially statistical way: individual moments are more or less sparse or thick, intense or soft. The piece was initially inspired in part by the early abstract works of American painter Philip Guston, in which individual brush-strokes, each one a small masterpiece, tend to concentrate toward the center of the canvas, leaving the edges of the painting mostly untouched. I wanted to try something similar in music, with clusters of small, highly individuated elements inhabiting a sonic universe in potentially limitless expansion. As is characteristic of my earliest scores, the music is charged with opposed extremes. The work’s four movements all have distinct characteristics: the first is sparse, soft and spacious; the second abruptly juxtaposes low and high registers; the third is a simple arch shape inhabited by jumpy, angular lines, progressing from solo to tutti and back again; and in the last movement, static harmonic fields and extremely rapid, virtuosic figurations are alternated, punctuated from time to time by some rather imperial-sounding percussion solos.
