In Review: Sweat

August 3, 2017
National

"In mid-July, the Bicycle Opera Project began its touring production of Sweat, the a cappella opera for 9 singers by composer Juliet Palmer and librettist Anna Chatterton. In this production directed by Banuta Rubess, BOP is giving Sweat its Canadian premiere, bringing to Ontario audiences the bleak story of the lives of women who work in the garment industry's sweat shops. Happily, Schmopera got to watch a technical run in their current space, the Aki Studio at Toronto's Daniels Spectrum.

The Wire: The birth of the synthesizer and new ways of thinking about sound

July 31, 2017
National

"Scientists like Helmholtz and Hertz explored the electrical essence of sound waves. Inventors like Canadian physicist Hugh LeCaine and Russian spy Leon Theremin extended that exploration to a new breed of electronic instruments. But it wasn't until Bob Moog came along and invented the synthesizer that the sound of electricity started to become a household sound in the music of rock bands.

Summer Opera Lyric Theatre presents two Canadian operas about magic in the village, both performed July 28 at Toronto’s Robert Gill Theatre.

"The cereus is a gangly plant, long skinny arms straggling out in all directions. But once a year, in July, it becomes beautiful when its flower appears.

This happened recently in the offices of Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, an unexpected piece of inspiration and authenticity for its upcoming production of John Beckwith’s Night Blooming Cereus.

Beckwith wrote the opera 60 years ago (...)"

"Canadian composer Andrew Staniland is currently a faculty member at Memorial University in St. John's, NL; there, he founded MEARL (Memorial ElectroAcoustic Research Lab), where his research team developed the - very cool - Mune digital instrument. Staniland's oratorio, Dark Star Requiem, earned him two Juno Award nominations in 2017; it was the "Beautymark Aria" from Dark Star Requiem that first caught our attention, at Tapestry Opera's Songbook VI in early 2016.
