"We used the animation to bring to life the joyful energy of the music and to show a kind of story arc that we felt was already present in the music," explain Taktus Duo's Greg Harrison and Jonny Smith via email. The percussion ensemble has just released its new video for Ann Southam's Glass Houses No. 5, shot by Endless Films and animated by multimedia artist pair Catshrine.

Talking with composers: Brian Harman

July 11, 2017

"Brian Harman's music first caught our ear when the Canadian Art Song Project presented his cycle, Sewing the Earthworm as part of their 2015 concert entitled The Living Spectacle. Harman collaborates often with artists of other media, and his work lends itself easily to other disciplines like dance, architecture and visual art.

Talking with composers: Alexina Louie

July 6, 2017

"Alexina Louie's music is a staple among Canadian soloists and ensembles. She writes for piano, voice, chamber groups, large orchestras, choirs, and ballet; her opera The Scarlet Princess (1996-2002) was commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company, and she has composed made-for-TV mini operas (Burnt Toast, Toothpaste) along with librettist Dan Redican and director Larry Weinstein.

We were thrilled to have the chance to ask Louie about that elusive concept of "inspiration", about the works in which she takes great pride, and her unexpected love for Motown..."
