Programme Note:
This piece consists of five movements moving in a wave like structure. The pitch content moves from high to low and then climbs back up to the high tessitura by the end of the piece. Also, each movement emphasizes one open string pitch with each movement moving down by a fifth. In addition to the structure of the piece creating one big wave, each movement contains wave like motions.

Programme Note:
Eiko Sadamatsu's 'dream story' is a poem filled with images of bitter coldness, emptiness, death, and nostalgia, but, for all that, remains a poem with beauty, life, and activity, not least in the speed of transitions between the images. In my setting of this poem, I attempt to capture the fragmentary nature of dream imagery with quick changes of texture and mood, and the cold emptiness with a focus on the high range of the shakuhachi and violin harmonics. The voice is often distant from the instruments, the dreamer moving through a disconnected world.

Programme Note:
These three short pieces, which run together without any break, are inspired by the poetry of Princess Shokushi (which can also be pronounced Shikishi), a poet, priestess, and nun in the late Heian and early Kamakura periods in mediaeval Japan. Her poems are filled with surprising turns of phrase and mood, shifting from light to dark in an instant, undercutting scenes of beauty with a sense of impending death and decay. My piece is an attempt to capture Shokushi’s interplay of light and dark, especially as found in her poetry depicting the changing seasons. In each of the three seasonal sections, one instrument’s music (flute, violin, and flute respectively) was composed following a strict pitch-matrix based on a numerological analysis of one of Shokushi’s seasonal poems, while the other instrument’s line was composed as a free commentary on and accompaniment to the more restricted, poetry-based material. In an additional nod to the work’s mediaeval Japanese inspiration, the form of the piece is based on the tripartite jo-ha-kyu structure of Noh drama. Those three sections are in this piece each associated with a season, the seasons in question being Autumn, Winter, and Spring, with Summer being left out at my personal whim. The poems, in the original Japanese and in Hiroaki Sato’s excellent English translations, are:
秋きぬと荻の葉風の告げしより思ひし事のただならぬ暮 Since a wind over the rushes told me that autumn came, things I think about have become unusual at dusk
冬の夜は木の葉がくれもなき月の俄にくもる初時雨かな A winter night: the moon, clear beyond a leafless tree, clouds suddenly as the first shower comes
山深み春とも知らぬ松の戸にたえだえかかる雪の玉水 Deep in the mountains, the pine door isn’t aware of spring – on it, intermittently dripping, beads of melting snow

Editing creates more and more sense out of a work or text. Everything in a piece is there for more than one reason; a chord might support the melody and develop a counter melody. An inner voice might give breathing room to the main tune but add a small, unexpected surprise to the texture.

I have just re-imagined a set of songs originally written over 20 years ago and observe that the harmonies were chosen often to clash with the vocal line. They were chords and clusters selected with joy, I was happy just to play them so long ago, but now I work to meld them into a cohesive shape.
