Classical piano competition for our young pianists in the GTA and only one uniquely remarkable pianist, in each category, may claim to be a Phoenix. Come and listen to the sound of our future virtuoso piano players. If not by family ties, come as a fan. They will enjoy having you!

Our objective is to offer the younger generation an experience to perform in front of a live audience. Although this is a competition, 3 of our finalists will also be offered a chance to perform in our "Peace" concert.

Programme Note:
'The Brain' was written for tenor voice, bass clarinet, and piano, with text based on a poem of the same name, by American poet, Emily Dickinson. It was premiered at Simon Fraser University Theatre (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada), in March 2003.

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and You—beside—
The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As Sponges—Buckets—do—
The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Programme Note:
A Celt on the Great Wall is a fantasy piece in which a Celt (someone of Irish decent) explores the Great Wall. The piece is programmatic in nature but the plot, time period, and various other details are left to the imagination of the listener. The first movement is a slow sentimental exploration of the legend of Meng Jiang Nu (孟姜⼥) using the folk song of the same name and the Irish folk song The Kesh Jig.The more upbeat second movement explores the more heroic and majestic history of the Great Wall. Written in sonata form, this movement uses two original themes, one in a Chinese folk style and the other in an Irish folk style. There is a short interlude in which two more folk songs are introduced and become intertwined: Feng Yang (凤阳花鼓) and The Minstrel Boy.

29 October 2012, Heliconian Hall, Toronto, Ontario
Christopher Lee, flute; Simon Capet, piano
