Description:

From the moment she heard Vladimir Ussachevsky’s early tape piece, Sonic Contours, during his Toronto visit in the mid-50s, Canadian composer Norma Beecroft has been fascinated by electronic music. In addition to producing an impressive, and often-overlooked body of work with electronic tape, that early interest set Beecroft upon a journey that will culminate in the launch of Pioneers of Electronic Music, an e-book featuring interviews with more than 20 crucial figures of the Post World War II era. Researched and recorded by Beecroft while traveling in the late 70s with her cassette tape recorder, the combined audio and transcriptions offer a rare and profound look at that era in music history. The ebook will be available for purchase through the Canadian Music Centre.

Join musician/journalist Kristel Jax in conversation with Norma Beecroft as she discusses her book, and her exchanges with various composers from John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, and Iannis Xenakis, to her Canadian counterparts including Barry Truax, James Montgomery, and Bill Buxton. The launch event will include an archival exhibit displaying images and news clippings from Beecroft’s career, and the Canadian Electronic Ensemble will present a special performance.
