Piano week and the road to Beethoven’s Ninth

August 6, 2014

"... String chamber music fans aren’t left out of the party either with performances on Wednesday at noon by the Ensemble Made in Canada of works by Coulthard and Dvorak, and at 2:30p.m. by the award-winning Cecilia String Quartet performing Mendelssohn #1, Beethoven Op. 18 #1 and Abigail Richardson’s Kitchen Ceilidh. Thursday sees Victoria, BC’s wonderful Lafayette String Quartet return with a program of Beethoven’s String Quartet in F minor Serioso preceeded by two works by female composers: Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in Eb Major and Rebecca Clarke’s Poem.

Everything culminates in our celebratory sold out Sunday performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony featuring the Elmer Iseler Singers and soloists Leslie Fagan, Russell Braun, Marion Newman and Michael Colvin under the baton of Jamie Sommerville. As many know, the final chorus includes a choral rendition of Schiller’s Ode to Joy which is used as the official anthem of the European Union. What better way to express gratitude for 35 years of incomparable and joyful music on the shores of Georgian Bay."
