Bramwell Tovey to leave symphony in good hands

"Breaking news always steals a march over business as usual. Thus, the surprise announcement last week that the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s much respected President and CEO Jeff Alexander is moving to head the renowned Chicago Symphony has stolen a bit of thunder from the VSO’s anticipated return to active service at the end of this month. A pity, because there’s a lot in the fall season to get excited about.

Right out of the gate, in the opening Saturday and Monday pair of concerts at the Orpheum Sept. 27 and 29, Bramwell Tovey sets the tone admirably. First comes a Canadian piece, A Thousand Natural Shocks, by the consistently interesting and appealing Ottawa-based composer Kelly-Marie Murphy..."
