Biography:

David Nichols first studied piano in Sarnia with Gladys Carswell, and later, in Toronto with Wilfred Powell and Clifford Poole. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master of Music in theory and composition, and also received his A.R.C.T. in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Following this music study, David graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario.
David has studied musical composition with R. Murray Schafer, John Beckwith, John Weinzweig, Gustav Ciamaga, William Albright and Stephen Rush. David won a first prize in the CBC Canada Council Awards for Young Composers competition, and received two grants from the Canada Council in support of his musical compositions. One grant provided the opportunity to study and compose in Darmstadt, Germany, and the other grant provided an extended period of composing at the University of Toronto’s Electronic Music Studio. David taught music at Northern Collegiate in Sarnia and Lambton Central Collegiate in Petrolia for thirty years, during which time he continued his compositional interests. David’s music has been played in Toronto, Darmstadt, Vancouver, Waterloo, Viet Nam, Sarnia, and on the CBC.
David is the president of the Sarnia Concert Association and the Lambton County Music Festival.
