Description:

Our first concert of 2015 promises to be a night of exhilarating new music enjoyed alongside familiar favourites!

HABIBI - The Promised Hand
We are exceptionally proud to open with a piece written exclusively for the VPO by Iman Habibi, the VPO's inaugural Composer-in-Residence. Audience members will be the first to hear his beautiful piece performed at this, its world premiere! Iman is a Iranian-Canadian composer and a graduate of UBC.

NICKEL - Concerto for Oboe
Next we will perform Canadian composer and UBC graduate, Christopher Nickel's, concerto written specifically for soloist Roger Cole, principal oboist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. This exciting work offers both soloist and orchestra a chance to show off their virtuosity and an opportunity to hear one of North America’s leading oboists perform a work specifically tailored to his strengths.

KHACHATURIAN - ‘Waltz’ from the Masquerade Suite
We will follow with this Armenian favourite, originally written in 1941 as the incidental music to Russian play, Masquerade, by Mikhail Lermontovit.

PROKOFIEV - Suite #2 from Romeo and Juliet
We will bring the evening to a close with Prokofiev's beautiful and dramatic ballet.
