Vancouver in 1958, images of a whale, East Sooke in the 40’s, over-foresting damage to Talunkwun Island in the Haida Gwaii and its tragic impact, a short story about Juliet and Juanita set in Vancouver by Nobel Prize winning author, Alice Munro. Each of the writings chosen are evocative of a certain aspect of BC life and history, and these sentiments are responded to and translated into music by the orchestra in accompanying pieces of music that reflect, sustain, and flow with the words.

Canadian soprano Suzie Leblanc sings two beautiful works inspired by the poetry of American poet Elizabeth Bishop commissioned by her and written by Canadian composers Christos Hatzis and Alisdair MacLean, as well as music by Tobin Stokes and others.

This concert is a great chance for people to experience the impact of music on words, and words on music. It is an artistic and meditative reflection on some of Canada’s best talents both as writers and composers and gives us the opportunity to meet many of BC’s great writers up-close and in a personal way. We are pleased that the authors will read their own works, and Sheila Munro will read her mother Alice Munro’s work. They will have the opportunity then to perform their words in a special way.
