Programme Note:
A “Karass”, in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Cat’s Cradle, is a fictional term for a group of people who (often unknowingly) are working together to fulfill an inevitable destiny. Much of the material in the two percussion parts from the beginning to rehearsal letter I is independent in nature with implied syncopations against the tempo. These syncopations from the performers respond to the pulse, but not always to one another, which I feel musically replicates this idea of the players working towards a similar musical goal without realizing so. The behaviors and densities of the performers result in musical episodes that build in overall tempo, density, and rhythmic cohesion. By rehearsal letter I, the performers interlocked in the “mission” of the same musical line, which cumulates in a series of shattering gestures and a separation of the two performers. After a somewhat relaxed transition, the music builds to a climactic drumming interplay amongst the performers. The piece concludes with an ascending, yet somber and un-resolving chorale structure followed by a downward cascading coda.Sections of the work feature exposed and delicate passages on bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, and tambourine. In orchestral percussion auditions, candidates are required to play excerpts from orchestral repertoire with extreme precision and clarity. Once the orchestra parts are added on a large stage, the artistry in playing these passages often goes unnoticed. I have composed these passages showcase the expressiveness of the most standard percussion instruments.Karass was commissioned by and dedicated to Tamburo Doppio (Keith Aleo
