CMC-OBA Wind Project: Call for Scores

CMC-OBA Wind Project: Call for Scores

February 24, 2016
Ontario

The Canadian Music Centre (Ontario Region) and the Ontario Band Association are presenting the third instalment of the Wind Composition project, a collaborative workshop that stimulates greater interest in contemporary Canadian educational band repertoire. This project will allow Canadian composers, performers, and educators to workshop a variety of pieces and sketches collaboratively on Saturday April 30. The performing group will be combined performers from London Ontario’s Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School and Encore: the Concert Band. Composers will have an opportunity to experiment, and gain insightful feedback from the participants. The session will also be recorded and archived audio will be provided to the composers.

Deadline for submissions: April 1, 2016

Eligibility:
• The reading session is open to any Canadian composer.
• Composers are welcome to submit underperformed and unperformed pieces, which may be published or unpublished, as well as sketches of works that are in development. If selected, scores and parts for published pieces must be provided by the composer.
• A composer may submit more than one piece, but only one piece from a given composer will be read at the sessions.
• The emphasis of the reading session is music for beginner and intermediate concert band (level 1, 2, and 3). The American Band College Music Grading Chart is available on the CMC and OBA sites as reference. Composers are encouraged to review the leveling information and provide the level for their submitted work—this can be an estimate.

Selection Process:
We will program 10 pieces from the submitted works, and will seek to have a representative group from among the applicants. Attention will be given to pieces that meet the technical requirements of the suggested level of the piece as well as the suitability and accessibility of the piece to a student group. Pieces that exceed the technical levels outlined for beginner and intermediate level bands may be included, but in that event they would likely be excerpted.

*Composers are strongly encouraged to attend the reading workshop in person. CMC and OBA will seek to facilitate conferencing options for some remote participants.

Submission Requirements: please submit the following:
• PDF Score
• A CV including a list of works
• Cover letter (max 1 page): include a short statement introducing the piece and its usefulness in an education setting, and indicate whether you are able to join the session in person.
*Optional: you can submit a recording of the piece if one is available in WAV or MP3 format.

Delivery of Submissions: Submissions should be sent electronically to ontario@musiccentre.ca.

The reading session will take place on Saturday, April 30 at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School, 125 Sherwood Forest Square.
