Programme Note:
locked darkness (tozasareshi yami) consists of two soundscapes for string orchestra. The shakuhachi part is somewhat removed from the strings sounds, and functions as a sort of guide for the listener through the strings’ sonic world. The title comes from a tanka (a traditional form of Japanese verse) by Ishii Tatsuhiko, found in his book ‘Bathhouse’.

Premiere Information:
30 June 2005, St. Helen’s Church, York, United Kingdom
Joe Browning, shakuhachi; Arnold Schönberg Chamber Orchestra; Dan Shilladay, conductor.
