Programme Note:
Te Deum is a hymn of praise. My goal with this setting was to treat the text in a much more syllabic manner than is traditionally done, paying less attention to word stress and often misplacing the natural accent of the text. All of this is intentional, and I have incorporated this syllabic treatment into some of my typical asymmetric writing, which naturally misplaces the constant beat of the music. My hope is that the overall effect dissociates the listener from the text and creates a much more meditative musical landscape… one of reflection on the overall essence of the Te Deum. I also hope that this dissociation helps to create an overarching meaning to the work, rather than directing the audience to the immediate word-for-word meaning of the corresponding text. I wrote this piece as I reflected on the world and how it is changing around us. I feel society is transforming into one that is less empathetic and sympathetic than ever before… and much more narcissistic, cold, detached, and chaotic. We lack meaningful connection between each other, and to morals, ethics, and faith. My Te Deum is meant to reflect this view of the world. It seems many people now understand the emotional content of our world in an ever increasingly detached way. We have become so accustomed to seeing the world through the lens of a camera, on a television, on our phones, or through our computers that we have become divorced from the affect and impact of any given event. We are inundated with (often negative) stories and information and the horrors of events in the world around us, and are ever increasingly treated by others in an increasingly dispassionate way. As a reaction to this, we build a distance between ourselves, and the emotion of what we are witnessing and experiencing. The result is an increasingly superficial society where common decency and courtesy has begun to fray. My Te Deum is meant to reflect this detachment. We hear the words of the hymn, we may understand (cognitively) the meaning, but we fail to grasp the true meaning and personal relevance.
