Programme Note:
This piece was written for the 62-bell Netherlands Centennial Carillon located in Victoria BC. It was given by the Dutch community of British Columbia in thanks for Canada's role in the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II. Queen Juliana of the Netherlands unveiled its cornerstone in 1967, Canada's centennial year, and it officially opened in May 1968. The carillon’s first 49 bells were cast at the Royal Bell Foundry by Petit & Fritsen at Aarle-Rixtel, in the Netherlands. Another 13 from the same foundry were added in 1971. From 1997 to 1998 I studied the carillon under Rosemary Laing, BC Provincial Carillonneur, and it was during this period that I wrote the piece. It is appropriate in this year of 2017, the 150th anniversary of Confederation, that I should finally prepare the work for publication.
