Programme Note:
Reson I is the first in a series of pieces that continues my research and writing involving resonance as both a physical, acoustic phenomenon as well as a metaphorical concept. Resonance is, of course, at the heart of the acoustic reality of acoustic musical instruments as well as the spaces in which music and sound of all types and genres are experienced. The study of resonance through filters, physical modeling, and virtual and architectural spaces has provided valuable insight into the sonic world we inhabit and for which sonic artists create. Reson I takes resonance as its point of departure and as its conceptual framework with the objective of linking the acoustic resonant characteristics of the instruments of the string quartet with electronic processes and procedures as well as with the spatial design of both instrumental and loudspeaker-diffused processing. The spectral and resonant characteristics of the instruments, activated by bowing or plucking a string that resounds within a semi-confined container before propagating outward, provide a point of departure and a variety of models for the creation of musical materials and concepts as well as for the development of electronic processing of the instrumental signals. Combining and contrasting the “local” resonance of the instruments with the “global” resonance of the overall system (instruments plus live electronic processing plus the acoustic of the performance space) serves as a principle dramatic and structural force in the piece. The piece consists of five sections: Resonancia liquida, Resonanz erschüttert, Resonantia diabolica, Risonanza macchinazione, and Résonance interne. Reson I was commissioned by the Land’s Penderecki String Quartet.lr
