Programme Note:
“The work Alap & Gat was inspired by the classical music of India. ‘Alap’ is a slow and non-metrical introduction which presents the notes of the raga. Raga is a complex melodic concept representing, among other things, the notion of mode (5 to 7 notes) and of melodic pattern. ‘Gat’ is the rhythmical section corresponding to the melody of the raga. The melody is the same but repeated in a variety of ways, and with increasing acceleration.”
