Programme Note:
"Each colour may be sung with only one voice on each note, unless there is a long note which requires more voices to stagger breathe - i.e. White and Black at the end. Although White is in the alto range, it should be sung with almost no vibrato. As much as possible, voices singing in the same colour should have voices that are very similar - i.e. Red, a bright, strong colour; Blue, a pure, cool sound. Mixed colours like Green and Brown may have a warmer, less blended sound than the primary colours.

"Some notes are held over briefly at the ends of phrases to overlap with the next colour and provide some continuity."

- Ruth Watson Henderson (from the score)
