Programme Note:
Tchal-Kouyrouk is the brave steed of Er-Toshtuk, Giant of the Kirghiz grasslands. Er-Toshtuk's soul has been robbed by a jealous witch. With his horse, he has left his people and family to travel down to hell in order to take it back.

I have always been fascinated by the twelve-tone series. As an object and as an abstract concept, the series represents for me a mystical symbol. But to use the series today is very dangerous: one risks to be absorbed by it and to be limited in his expression to the unilateral aesthetic of the serial and post-serial composers of the 50s and 60s. Why then still want to take the series out of the history books? Because I have the feeling that it is far from having said everything it had to say. I see the series not as an element generating an aesthetic but as a technical element with extraordinary potential and flexibility. Bearing this in mind while composing this work, I have developed a system where the series generates a rich and diverse harmony as well as a totally transparent structure. Also, I extensively used, in a somewhat naïve fashion, the series as a beautiful and expressive melody.

In terms of musical materials, Tchal-kouyrouk et la septième face du cube is a very simple work, using only seven different types of materials. They are heard several times one after another in the first part and they gradually blend in the second part. The work ends on a coda where the tuba exposes the magical series in a long solo.
