Arthur Marc Bachmann

Arthur M. Bachmann (b. March 27, 1961) Born and raised in Calgary, Arthur began studying viola in Calgary and then went on to receive his Bachelor of Musical Arts degree in Viola Performance and an Artist Diploma in Performance from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario. For three of the years while at university, Arthur also played professionally with Orchestra London, Canada. In 1984 he went on from London to Vancouver to study viola with Gerald Stanick and then to Banff to attend the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in their Advanced Studies in Music, Winter program. In 1986 Arthur won a position as violist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, which he holds to this date.

Arthur began composing at the age of 13, and after many 'sins of youth', as Rossini put it, stopped actively composing at the age of 19. It was not until 1991, after not writing much for almost 11 years, that composing began to call again and he quickly succumbed to the prospect of a career in composition. Since then, Arthur has received commissions from many ensembles and arts organizations, as well as having done arrangements of a wide variety of music for various ensembles, including 'Pop' charts for symphony orchestra and soloists. His music has been played across Canada, in the United States, and most recently in Europe. He has also been recorded many times for C.B.C. radio, as well as having his music on a number of C.D.s.

Arthur's compositions, using contemporary classical idioms, attempt to bridge the gap between composer, performer and audience, while still remaining accessible to a large cross section of music listeners.
