Executive Director, Elisabeth Bihl, to leave Canadian Music Centre December 2013

Elisabeth Bihl, Executive Director since May 1999 announced today that she plans to step down from her position at the end of December 2013

Elisabeth has chosen to leave CMC at a high point; “Looking back over the past 14 years, I know that this is the right time for me to move on to new opportunities. Under my guidance the organization has grown and moved into the digital age. Back in 2001 we began to develop what is today CMC’s Digital Library, we stayed in the forefront of technology with the Centre’s popular CentreStreams archival audio streaming service, the new CMC Composer Showcase website launched earlier this year, strengthened and solidly established our presence in the community for eight years with the New Music in New Places program which gave birth to the Creative Hub spaces at the CMC Regional Centres and the National Office Chalmers House. Ultimately over the past four years we have made notable inroads abroad introducing and distributing Canadian composers’ written and recorded music in the world market place. Today Centrediscs is an award-winning internationally distributed label producing some 12 recordings annually. CMC has become a vital partner to composers and performers throughout Canada. With a new set of By Laws and a ready to implement CMC Strategic Plan in place, I believe this is the opportune time for someone else to step into this crucial role and keep the CMC front and centre”, says Elisabeth Bihl.

Elisabeth is active on a number of boards including the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC) Vice President; The Canadian Music Publishers Association, (CMPA) Treasurer; a founding member of the Canadian Senior Artists Resource Network (CSARN), and the Creators Copyright Coalition. Past boards include Vice President of the American Marketing Association (AMA), the Association of Cultural Executives. Elisabeth was a founding member and President of the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and Co-founder of the National Festival Network. As a frequent public speaker on cultural issues in Canada and abroad she ensured that the CMC and Canada’s composers were well represented and promoted.

“With Elisabeth at the helm over the past 14 years the CMC has achieved a remarkable number of accomplishments and the organization has enjoyed renewed relevancy and growth. Her visionary nature, boundless energy and dedication to Canada’s composers and the music community have made a notable impact on us all” said Owen Underhill, President of the Canadian Music Centre’s Board of Directors.

Elisabeth notes “I count myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Canada’s greatest composers, especially our pioneer composers when creating the Composers Portrait CD series as well as welcoming and encouraging the many budding young composers that join CMC every year. To have been a witness to hundreds of premiers and inspiring concerts during my time is simply invaluable. I am also very grateful to have had the chance to work together with the many dedicated and enthusiastic members of the CMC board who all made sure this remarkable organization would prosper.”

The Board has started the planning process for the search for Ms. Bihl’s successor and has struck a special committee of the Board to manage this process.
