"A highlight of last week for me was being able to chat with Phil Nimmons and David Braid, in advance of their duo concert this Friday at the NAC Fourth Stage. Naturally, the focus was on Nimmons, a most venerable, bright-shining light of Canadian music, still performing and engaging with audiences at the age of 90.

Here’s my story about Nimmons and Braid — please get a jump those who will read it in Tuesday’s Citizen.

You would understand if the Phil Nimmons, the dean of Canadian jazz, were to stop working.

At 90, he has spent seven decades composing, performing and teaching with the country’s best musicians. While a recent hip replacement has slowed him down, Nimmons — who in 1976 won the first Juno Award given for jazz — continues to give concerts and mentor students at the University of Toronto, where he is the Director Emeritus of Jazz Studies..."
