Honouring Youth for Music leadership & Phil Nimmons

Honouring Youth for Music leadership & Phil Nimmons

May 16, 2014

On June 1st, the Youth for Music Network will kick off with a fun-raiser event at the Jazz Bistro with a special tribute to Canada's oldest working jazz music educator - Phil Nimmons, OC, OOnt. A well-known music educator, Nimmons has inspired thousands of young people through his teaching, composing and performing. The event will celebrate the link between learning music and jazz audiences, educators and musicians.

Funds raised from this event will support the Youth for Music network, especially youth leadership awards, including "NUFSICISUM" (read backwards), a special award in honour of Phil Nimmons. The NUFSICISUM awards will go to youth leaders who make a difference for their school music programs.

The Jazz Bistro event will showcase Nimmons' original compositions, and include performances from:

- David Braid, two-time Juno award winning jazz pianist;
- Heather Bambrick, singer/broadcaster, winner of the National Jazz Award for Vocalist of the Year and Broadcaster of the Year;
- The W Jazz Collective comprising Tara Kannangara (trumpet), Tara Davidson (alto sax), Shannon Graham (tenor sax), Heather Segger (trombone), Hannah Barstow (piano), Gabriella Ciurcovich (bass), Laura Swankey (voice) and Robin Claxton (drums);
